Moving is nothing shy of chaotic. Whether it’s across the country, across town, or even just across the hall, the process to upheaval everything in your life is the definition of stress-inducing. But for all of the stress you feel from packing and unpacking, the changes and new environment make for a rough situation for your furry friend. That’s why we offer you these tips for moving with a dog.
Give Them a Safe Space
As you wrap up everything you own into unfamiliar boxes and slowly transform every room into an unrecognizable space, your dog will naturally become a bit anxious. For their well being, it’s a good idea to maintain or introduce their own safe space in the form of a crate. This provides an area where your dog can go for sanctuary from the seemingly endless supply of boxes. This space provides a cohesive area that won’t change.
That crate serves multiple purposes. It’ll also keep them safe during the drive to your new home. They’ll have their own space whether you’re driving a short journey or making a long expedition. It also means they’ll be secured while you’re driving – preventing them from hoping from front to back and creating an unsafe driving environment.
You can probably get away with packing away most of their toys but you’re going to want to keep some essentials on hand. Their food, medications, first aid, and spare towels should be kept in an accessible location. Make sure you have any medications refilled and consult your vet for a referral if you’re moving out of the area.
