Summer is the season everyone seems to love. Images of vacations, barbecues, and poolside get togethers will simple cause you to smile without even realizing it. Of course, we want our beloved furballs by our sides during these adventures. To keep cool during these escapades, we offer you these summer weather tips for dogs.
No Unattended Vehicles
It should go without saying, but don’t leave your pooch in an unattended vehicle. Summer heat makes the temperature rise quickly inside of a vehicle – even with the windows cracked. An 85 degree day can see temperatures of 120 degrees inside of a car! Don’t leave them behind, even for a minute.
Offer Shade & Drinking Water
If your dog is going to be spending time outdoors, they’re going to need the same comforts you’d desire: a cool drink of water and some shade to protect them from the sun. The high temps can be particularly harsh on your pet so keep a vigilant eye on them.
Use Sunscreen
Believe it or not, your dog could benefit from a little SPF protection as well. Skin cancer is the leading cause of death in dogs so slather on a health dose of the good stuff every 6-8 hours while you’re refreshing yours.
Limit Exposure
Your dog doesn’t want to take a lap around the neighborhood on a hot and humid day any more than you do. Keep activity limited to the cooler times in the day so they’re not overexerted when it’s extremely hot.
Fill a Kiddie Pool
Babies aren’t the only ones that like to splash around in a kiddie pool. Your canine will appreciate the small body of water to keep cool on hot days.
Keep Off of Asphalt
That blacktop absorbs heat and can do a number on your dog’s paw pads. If it’s too hot for you to walk on barefoot, it’s too hot for them. Keep off of asphalt or invest in doggie boots for their protection.
Remember Your Pest Protection
Hot weather is spawning time for those obnoxious pests that go after your dog. Remember to administer flea and tick preventative, as well as heartworm preventative. These are very important for your pet’s health.
Cool Treats Are Appreciated
Your dog would enjoy a nice frozen confectionary as much as you. Whip up one of these recipes and keep a few on hand for those days where a little extra assistance is needed!
